It was with slight trepidation that we set off for the first Bodywize Health Retreat weekend at Noosa. Was it going to be full of exercise? Were we going to faint from lack of food and detoxification? Were there going to be gorgeous muscular men giving us massages and pedicures? None of these were actually correct (shame about the last one though!).
We arrived bright and early at Noosa to be greeted by Darren, smiling and always ready to push you when you think that you can’t go any further!
We settled into our cabins which were in a bush setting with kangaroos and low flying native birds…. A big change from the city life that most of us are used to!
We started the weekend with a friendly game of volleyball which showed the strengths (and weaknesses!) of all those involved. Everyone got to know each other in that first hour and we awaited what was to come. After our lunch of detoxifying minestrone soup we had our first talk on acid / alkaline in the body. It was really interesting and got everyone thinking about their diets and how certain foods may / may not affect the body. Darren also passed around his wheatgrass for all of us to try which is a very interesting experience if you’ve never tried it before.
Our first ‘session’ was on Saturday afternoon. We were divided into two groups for two different sessions. The first was a weights circuit whilst kangaroos and their joeys hopped around us. The second was a kayak across the lake. This was indeed a challenge for some (namely the two of us) as we paddled out to a designated point and then tried to paddle back in without capsizing! Without much kayaking experience this was quite an ordeal but on hitting the sand back on terra firma we felt a big sense of achievement! Just to end the session off on a high note, in our two groups we had to run whilst carrying a kayak up the hill, across the road, over a few more hills and around to the kayak shed! The sight of us all running and carrying the kayak would have given anyone passing quite a laugh! If I remember correctly it was our team that won this challenge (congratulations team!). After this mammoth session most of us had trouble moving so it was time for a rest before dinner.
Our detox followed on to dinner with delicious grilled fish and steamed vegetables followed by green tea. Green Tea was featured prominently over the weekend and is something that we’ve taken to enjoying on a regular basis. Darren spent some time showing us a couple of basic massage moves and we tried them out on each other to ease our weary muscles. The day ended with a few games of bocce and trying to dodge the kangaroos in the dark. We all went to sleep quite early preparing for our 6am start on Sunday. Darren assured us that there would be penalties for those arriving late so all alarms were set for an early start.
Sunday morning was our favourite session of the weekend. A walk to the beach followed by a pretty intense workout involving running, boxing and sprints…. Sprints on the sand and sprints in the water. Everyone was truly exhausted after this session and maybe a little delirious because we all ended up swimming and lying on the sand fully clothed after this session had finished. A slightly slower walk back to camp was followed by breakfast and more green tea.
The weekend finished with a talk by Darren on motivation and setting goals because that’s what it is really all about. No-one can lose 10 kilos and look like a supermodel in one weekend but it’s all about setting specific goals and milestones for yourself. It’s not enough to say “I want to be thin” or “I want to be fit” as this doesn’t really give you an end point. Be specific on exactly what you want and congratulate yourself when you get there.
The whole weekend was really about changing the way you think and focussing on how you want your body and your life to be. It’s easy to get caught up in the stress of everyday life but it is important to stop every once in a while, take a breath, make some changes and re-evaluate what’s important to you. This is what the both of us got out of the weekend and we’ve tried to incorporate this attitude into our everyday lives.
Thanks to Darren for arranging such a fabulous weekend. Thanks for pushing us and for challenging us in mind, body and spirit. |
